THE NUMBER OF VISITORS TAKES OFF
Even though the Bird Park was situated in an ideal area of Villard-les-Dombes, in 1989 the number of visitors started to decline. In 1996, the General Council co-financed a study with the group that run the park. In December '97, the General Council voted to finance a five-year investment plan. Four years and 7.63 million euros later, we've reached in 2002 the 3rd stage of the construction which includes the Small Dombes, the Children's House, the Valley of Birds of Prey and the Labyrinth. Everything will be completed in 2003 with the installation of and Area for Cold Lands and a Zone for Waders. The park will cover 35 hectares as opposed to its original 23. The results as we reach 4/5 of this 5-year plan, are relatively easy to measure. 1999: 170,000 visitors; 2000: 185,000 just during 7 and a half months of operations; 2001: 250,00.
