The citadel, a 17 th century masterpiece designed by Vauban for Louis XIV, is famous today as one of the shrines of cultural tourism; unique in character, it invites you to encounter not only history but also the world of living creatures. What to see: Vauban’s citadel and its bastions, encircled by the ramparts, the Museum of the Resistance and the Deportation, the Franche-Comté Museum (regional traditions), a new insectarium with more than 100 species of living insects, an ecological aquarium, a noctarium, unique in Europe (the world of nocturnal animals), a museum of natural history, and much else. Exhibitions and events all year round.
