Welcome to the Flower Garden of la Source in Orleans, Loiret

The Flower Garden of la Source at Orleans-Loiret was set up in 1963 as part of an ambitious urban project started by the City of Orleans and the Loiret Department Council. Located in the Loire Valley and registered as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2000, the Flower Garden of la Source is a site of natural beauty. Its remarkable geographical location at the border between the slopes of Sologne and the plains of the Loire Valley give it uniquely hilly topography. Springing up at its centre, having coursed underground for several kilometres, is the source of the Loiret.
Stroll about to your heart's content in the source garden, the rose garden, the butterfly glasshouse, the iris garden or the dahlia garden... Explore the rockery and its flower meadows or follow the seasonal or thematic routes. For a new look at the trees and gardens, leave the beaten track and make your way across the lawns. Give your senses an outing and let your imagination run wild!

The gardens
The Flower Garden is part of a project to restore, conserve, and follow good environmental practices. This is why, in certain areas, we limit the gardeners' involvement thereby enabling various fauna and flora to bloom. At the same time, no environmentally harmful products are used when planting in the rose garden, the butterfly glasshouse, or the vegetable garden and its orchard.

Shape Garden and Mirror Garden
One of the first gardens you’ll discover on entering the park, the shape garden, with its trees pruned in the form of clouds, awakens the imagination. Inspired by the tradition of Zen gardens, it invites us to find, just for an instant, balance and serenity. Adjoining the Asian-inspired garden is the mirror garden, conceived by two Japanese architects, Shigeki Maeda and Daisuke Sugawara.

Rock Garden
Located between the meadowlands and the trees and their undergrowth, the rock garden evokes a mountain landscape where mineral and vegetable intermingle. With its composition in the form of steps where different environments live side by side, you’ll discover a peat bog, a waterfall and alpine vegetation.
From the belvedere above, you’ll have a panoramic view over the grasslands gardens and the iris collection. Grasslands Gardens In the depths of summer, follow grassy footpaths across these meadow gardens, allowing the long grass to tickle your ankles! At the canal’s edge, take a break to count the frogs! Three varieties of grasslands are presented in this garden – in the foreground, the marshlands, harbouring riverbank flowers and aquatic flora, bordered by an alpine meadow. Just beyond, a horticultural meadowland gives way to a meadow left to the spontaneity of nature.

Iris Garden
After crossing fields of blue irises and visiting the two sceaux (precious boxes of rare irises traced in the form of emblems evoking Chinese calligraphy), you enter the garden by an open breach in the wall itself. You are greeted by jostling giant pick-up sticks, where the colours of the irises express themselves in chromatic order. In the background, a plot of our latest iris acquisitions.

Dahlia garden (mid July-mid October)
Displayed in a circular garden, rows of dahlias alternate with strips of grass, playing on the contrast between the plain green of the lawn and the variegated colours of the flowers.

The tropical area [July - August]
Alongside the fuchsias, the tropical area recreates the exotic surroundings of four continents - Central America, Australia, Asia and tropical Africa. There are around twenty species of exotic birds in surroundings resembling their natural habitat made up from familiar hardy plant species. Walk from aviary to aviary to experience an ornithological world that is as much auditory as visual in this thick, rambling vegetation.

Butterfly Greenhouse [March – November]
Recreating the climatic conditions of a tropical garden, this 250-squaremetre hothouse’s temperatures fluctuate between 25 and 30°C and its humidity remains near 80%. Amongst the luxurious vegetation where orchids, banana trees and ficus intermingle, exotic butterflies flitter freely. Let the poetry of these fragile and ephemeral insects cast their enchantment upon you!

Vegetable Garden
The vegetable garden of the Parc Floral de la Source abounds in edible plants, from the best known and most ordinary to the most rare and unexpected. Fruit trees, herbs and early fruit and vegetables all invite you to put your senses into action, savouring this sampling of shape, colour and scent!

Garden of La Source - Le Bouillon
Voyage through a light mist and enter thegarden of the source. A verdant alcove lined with vegetation hailing from wet environments, this garden intertwines bamboo, butterburs and Tasmanian tree ferns as well as Japanese azaleas. And on either side of the path, hidden amongst the vegetation, Woolfhart’s sculptures “les amants bleus” – The Blue Lovers. At one end of the garden, you can catch a glimpse of the principal source of the Loiret River. Long the object of mystery, this karstic reappearance of the Loire draws its name, le Bouillon, from the frothing bubbling that so characterises it. Due to the existence of limestone plateaux, some of the river’s waters flows in a network of more or less 40 kilometres of subterranean galleries. These waters resurface in the centre of the park to then rejoin the Loire.

Rose Garden
The rose garden wraps itself around the mirror pool. The main pathways are punctuated by a series of pergolas where roses and clematis climb. Displayed in association with perennials and herbs, modern, ancient and botanical varieties of roses flourish. Seated on the rose garden’s circular bench, profit from the remarkable view overlooking the château and its “embroidered” garden.

Place des Fuchsias
Located between the Loiret River and the rose garden, the Place des Fuchsias is sheltered by rows of plane trees (sycamores) forming a natural stage area. Dewdrops trickling from their branches nourish the pots of fuchsias, offering visitors the leisure to discover these delicate blossoms from every angle.

Activities
Free badminton and croquet, books and magazines are available free of charge in the Leisure Area. For a moment of relaxation, come and see what is available. Borrowing something is easy!
